I create this website on David Archuleta, the teen American Idol, to document everything there is to know about him, on his journey in American Idol. The first time I saw David Archuleta on the American Idol, I was totally blown away. Move aside Jordin Sparks, if David wins on 22 May, he will be the youngest ever American Idol!
David's journey in the American Idol contest began with the tryouts at Qualcomm Stadium on July 30 and 31, 2007. At that time, he was only 16. He sang John Mayer's Waiting on the World to Change. All three judges loved him, with Paula saying, "I wanna squeesh you!" So it was welcome to Hollywood for David Archuleta.
During the Hollywood auditions, he sang Bryan Adam's "Heaven". Once again, all three judges loved his rendition, and that sends him to be one of the 12 males in the Top 24.
The theme for the Top 24 was 60's songs. The American Idol Top 24 was aired on February 19, 2008. He sang "Shop Around" by the Miracles. Simon told him, "that was by a comfortable mile the best performance of the night so far", to the ecstatic David.
David had no trouble sailing from the Top 24 to the Top 20 in American Idol. The theme this round was songs from the 70's. The segment was aired on February 27, 2008. This time around, David sang "Imagine" by John Lennon. That unforgettable rendition of "Imagine" took David to the Top 16 in American Idol.
The Top 16 in American Idol carried the theme of songs from the 80's. It aired on March 4, 2008. David chose to sing "Another Day in Paradise" by Phil Collins. Since contestants are now allowed to play musical instruments, David chose to play the piano for part of the song. This time around, the judges' comments were more lackluster than the previous week, with Simon giving David an advise that if he doesn't start showing his fun side, he is going to sound quite gloomy and depressing.

That, however, did not stop David Archuleta from reaching the Top 12. American Idol Top 12 segment aired on March 11, 2008, and the theme of that week was songs by the Lennon/McCartney collection. David sang "We Can Work It Out", which turned out to be his weakest performance at American Idol, as he forgot the lyrics. But it would take more than a line or two to derail David's ascend.
So, the following week, we saw David in the Top 11. Once again, it was another Beatle song. David chose to sing "The Long And Winding Road", the last Number One song from the Beatles. "Hopefully I'll remember all the words of the song," said David with a grin, "it doesn't look too good when you don't - so, hopefully that'll be a thing of the past from now on."
On Top 10, aired on March 25, 2008, Ryan Seacrest brought up the subject that David has to miss normal school and so have to take classes in Hollywood. Ryan asked David what he was missing about school, and David mentioned the Prom, which he said he has no idea. Any idea if he would take the Prom? David grinned shyly, trying to evade the question. Ryan further prodded if that someone is sitting close to his father. For Top 10 week, the theme was "Year They Were Born". David sang "You're the Voice" from John Farnham. Simon did not like the performance, and as usual, did not mince his words. Nonetheless, that did not stop David's progress.
The next week, David Archuleta reaches Top 9 of American Idol. It aired on April 1, 2008. This time, the theme was songs by Dolly Parton. David chose "Smokey Mountain Memories". Ms Parton, who was preparing David for the song, said he brought tears to her eyes when she head him sing Smokey Mountain Memories, a song very dear to her heart. It was one of his best performances, on par with "Imagine", and all the judges loved it.
So, no problem sailing into Top 8 on American Idol. That segment aired on April 8, 2008. It was Inspirational Songs this week, and David Archuleta sang Angels from Robbie Williams. In an interview with Ryan Seacrest, David said he usually practised early in the morning, or late at night, but he hope he doesn't wake up the neighbors, as he practised pretty loud some times. Simon said, though it was not David's best vocals, he predicted that David was going to sail through to the next round. And, as usual, Simon was right.
That next round, Top 7 of American Idol, aired on April 15, 2008. In this round, it was songs by Mariah Carey. David picked "When You Believe". All three judges were unanimous in their praises of his performance.
That takes David easily into the Top 6. This segment of American Idol aired on April 22, 2008, and featured songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Upon reaching Top 5 of American Idol, which aired on April 49, 2008, each contestant gets to render two songs. This time, the songs featured are from Neil Diamond. David sang "Sweet Caroline" and "America".
David Archuleta's performance in Top 4 of American Idol, aired on May 6, 2008, was my favorite to date. On that week, he sang songs from the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame". The songs he chose were "Stand by Me" by Ben E. King and "Love Me Tender" by Elvis Presley. Simon commented that David did not beat the competition that night, he crushed the competition.
With that brilliant performance, David sailed into Top 3 of American Idol. It aired on May 13, 2008. For this - the semi finals - the contestants performed three songs: one selected by the judges, one by themselves and one by the producers. David sang "And So It Goes" by Billy Joel, selected by Paula Abdul; "With You" by Chris Brown, selected by himself, and "Longer" by Dan Fogelberg, selected by the producers.
Finally, the Finals of American Idol Season 7 aired on May 20, 2008. David Archuleta was in top form and delivered three songs flawlessly. They were Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me", a new song "In This Moment", and once again performed "Imagine" by John Lennon.
