David Archuleta sang "We Can Work It Out" from the Lennon/McCartney collection on the Top 12 of American Idol. It was his weakest performance as he forgot part of the lyrics, something which could not be hidden away.
Randy Jackson: David, check it out, man, check it out, you know I like your voice, I'm a fan of yours, right. This week man it was not on point. This kind of vibe is not the kind of vibe for me. It felt very forced, and it just didn't quite work, if you know what I mean, y'know, all I'm hearing in my head is the Stevie version, dude, and nobody is going to do that better. It just didn't work for me quite.
Paula Abdul: You know what, this wasn't your best week, but David, you are a front runner, you're a strong person in this competition. You know, forgetting the lyrics - it gets a little tough, you can never let it show on your face. Never let it show on your face. It's okay though, you know what, we love ya.
Simon Cowell: Okay, ah, David, we've got 12 people here in this competition, all in the same position, all want to win, so I am going to treat everybody fairly. That was a mess, right? You stumbled over the lyrics in the beginning. Randy's quite right, you should not have done the Stevie Wonder version, it was just all over the place, and at this point of the competition, I expect incredible performances, it wasn't. It was your weakest performance so far.
David could only keep a faint smile. Ryan Seacrest asked David afterwards, "Now David, how sure were you of that song before you did it?"
"I wasn't too sure, I just gave it my best shot, and have fun," David said.
According to Entertainment Tonight, the "mess" on We Can Work It Out also earned David some pressure from his father, Jeff Archuleta, who was reported to have yelled at him. However, Jeff denied having yelled at his son, during an interview with Us Magazine.
