It was like almost effortless that David Archuleta sailed into the Top 16! This segment, which aired on March 4, 2008, carried a theme of songs from the 70's. David was the last performer, and he chose to perform "Imagine" by John Lennon.
Randy Jackson: David Archuleta - it's like watching one of your concerts, man, I like that, the piano playing and then you get up, grab the mike, ah, you know, it was good, it was another interesting song choice for you, I mean, it didn't show off your vocal prowess, what you can do, but ah, it was nice, you know, there were a couple pitch problems from you, [but] it was nice ...
Paula Abdul: I love that there were a couple of notes that were off because it proved to me that you were not this make-belief person that was programed to do everything perfect, in that imperfection though, you are still perfect, you're perfectly wonderful for this competition - you have a wonderful sensibility. David, pick songs that you can really shine on. Keep going for it.
Simon Cowell: Ah David, it wasn't as good as last week. I think you should (a) stayed at the piano, I think you've gotta be careful, you're seventeen years old, you're becoming like it's all getting a little bit gloomy here - aaam, you haven't got to keep singing sad songs - Imagine last week, Another Day in Paradise this week, it's quite a sad song, but I just think you've gotta lighten up a little bit. There's no question, you're gonna make it to the finals next week, probably gonna be in the final too, but now we've gotta see a slightly more fun side occasionally, otherwise it might get a bit depressing.
David kept smiling, and took the judges' comments to heart. Ryan Seacrest made a remark that any song with any level of intimacy is depressing for Simon.
