It was like almost effortless that David Archuleta sailed into the Top 20! This segment, which aired on February 27, 2008, carried a theme of songs from the 70's. David was the last performer, and he chose to perform "Imagine" by John Lennon.
Randy Jackson: Yo, check it out - all this year it's about the young'uns, dawg, that's about the best vocals I've ever heard on this show - check it out, you're singing with such maturity way beyond your years and all you can say is you were born to do exactly what you were doing there - that was brilliant! One thing though, I've just got one question - why didn't you sing the first verse?
David: I only have time for one verse and the third one was actually my favorite, and I thought, that's a great message... You're hot, hot, you're [on] FIRE!
Paula Abdul: David, you are ridiculous, I want to squeeze you, squeeze your head off, and dangle you from my rear view mirror, you are - honest to God - one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and one of the most moving performances I've ever heard. Soak it all in - you're destined for superstardom!
Simon Cowell: [It's] very, very risky to do a John Lennon song, particularly that one, but it worked. And I've gotta tell you, right now, you're the one to beat. And there are 19 very missful contestants here tonight, trust me after that -
Once again, David was beaming from cheek to cheek, what more with all the screaming girls in the audience, he was intoxicated by all the good words coming from the judges.
