David Archuleta's sterling performance last week guaranteed him a spot on the American Idol Top 3 segment, which aired on May 13, 2008. This week, David performed three songs. They were "And So It Goes" by Billy Joel, selected by Paula Abdul, "With You" by Chris Brown, selected by himself; and "Longer" by Dan Fogelberg, selected by the producers. A segment of video was shown of David at his homecoming in Murray, Utah, where the mayor declared a David Archuleta Day.
And So It Goes
Paula selected this song because it shows the level of difficulties which she was confident he can handle and exploit the tenor in his voice.
Randy Jackson: Check it out baby, you know what man, what I'm really happy for you this moment is Paula chose an adult song for you, I mean you can sing anything dude. The Billy Joel thing worked well on you, I would love to see you at the piano, playing the piano singing it, it don't even matter dude, you are in the zone, you're in it to win it baby.
Paula Abdul: It was a pure and sunny performance. Tonight, I really felt you were a story teller, you really were. It was a beautiful performance.
Simon Cowell: It was very good, it was, no surprises. Predictable. It's not really a criticism, it was good - I don't think it was outstanding, it was ... anyway, good.

Randy Jackson: Check it out baby, I applaud the fact you're trying something new and young, because that's the kind of record you should make, but I don't think it was the right song, I don't believe it. I couldn't believe it.
Paula Abdul: I think it sits right in the right tone of your voice, I think you should be singing songs like this - you're so used to singing ballads, but this is another part of who you are. I would just work on not extending the phrases, just shortening up a little big. I think you did a great job.
Simon Cowell: Look David, I applaud you that you didn't do a very tricky ballad as I would have expected. However, it was a little bit like a chuhuahua trying to be a tiger, in so much as it's not really you. I thought it was a bit awkward, the dancing -
Randy Jackson: It's just not quite you.

Randy Jackson: Once again, an interesting song choice for you. It doesn't matter - you can sing the phone book - you are in the zone, another hot one from you, hot, hot, hot!
Paula Abdul: It was another lovely performance from you, David, I expect nothing more, it was just very lovely.
Simon Cowell: I'm not going to criticize you, for I thought you sang the song very well. However, I thought the song and the lyrics were absolutely horrible. It's so gooey, it's something you'd chose for a ninety year old, and you're seventeen years old. Having said that, I think you've done enough to get into the finals next week.
